What is the Beebe Lab?
At the Beebe Lab, we harness the power of never before seen ingredients to deliver innovative skincare prototypes into the hands of passionate testers (you!). This allows us to gather key data on product performance while you and your skin reap the benefits from our formulas. A win-win!
Why did you create the Beebe Lab?
At the Beebe Lab we are excited to develop innovative product prototypes using our sustainable materials technologies. The setup of the Beebe Lab testing program allows us to quickly iterate on our prototypes and bring our new materials to the world in a fun, new way. Being tied to normal product development cycles can slow down the process of bringing new ingredients to market. We have a need for speed because the world needs sustainable skincare solutions now.
How Does It Work?
You sign up to be a Beebe Tester
We tell you when new prototypes are available and you let us know if you are available for testing
We will ship you our latest and greatest product prototypes
You test them in the comfort of your own home for a designated period of time (this is the fun part)
Then you send us your feedback to receive prizes, free products and more!
Who can join the Beebe lab?
The program is open to US residents only at this time.
When will I hear from you?
Once you have signed up to be a Beebe, we will keep your information in our secure database. When a prototype is ready for testing we will send an email calling for participants and the testing guidelines. If you are able and willing to participate in the trial, you let us know. Then we will send a confirmation email if you have been selected for the trial with all of the relevant information.
How do I submit my feedback?
During the testing period, we will stay in close contact with you and be here to answer any and all questions that may arise. We will email you feedback forms that are easy to use, record your data and send back electronically. In certain instances we might even reach out to talk more about your experience.
What kind of feedback will I be expected to give?
We will ask for feedback in the form of a questionnaire and in free form commentary. In certain instances we would also be happy to receive pictures, but this is not required and is optional.
Do I get paid?
While this is not a program that involves cash payment, we do offer free Eighteen B products, discounts and more.
Why are you called Beebe Labs?
In true Eighteen B fashion there is a nerdy meaning to this name. Beebe stands for Beta-testing Endeavors for Beauty. What else would you expect from us?
What ingredients are used in Beebe Lab prototypes?
All of our products showcase our innovative new ingredients, starting with our B-SILK PROTEIN. These innovative ingredients are rigorously tested for safety including skin irritation, sensitization, phototoxicity, ocular irritancy, heavy metals contamination, microbial contamination, and shelf stability. All ingredients in our prototypes have a score of 0-4 according to the EWG’s Skin Deep database and are vegan. If ingredients are derived from gluten, soy, and coconut, this will be indicated in the trial sign up process.
Why are you called Eighteen B?
Our key ingredient, b-silk™ protein, is a high molecular weight protein made up of a series of 18 repeating molecular segments (we call them blocks, which is where the “b” comes from). Each of these blocks is made up of an amino acid pattern that was derived from the pattern found in natural silk. We drew inspiration from its structure and created Eighteen B.
What is the reason for your new pricing?
In our new business model, as a testing lab, we are de-emphasizing product sales and focusing instead on research and innovation for the future. We decided to make this change a benefit for our continuing customers, and lower our prices. Please know that this is the exact same product, with the exact same ingredients that you previously paid more for.
Where are Eighteen B products made?
Our products are manufactured in California, with high quality ingredients sourced all over the world.
Eighteen B Products
What makes Eighteen B products so great?
B-silk™ protein, our proprietary key ingredient, is a structural protein designed to complement the skin’s natural barrier, providing a defensive layer against the elements. When applied, b-silk™ protein gives a lightweight, breathable barrier that helps keep nourishing, hydrating ingredients in and keeps environmental stressors at bay.
What is a structural protein?
Structural proteins, like collagen and elastin, are a natural component of your skin’s extracellular matrix. They work like a scaffolding, providing strength and elasticity to your skin.
How do Eighteen B products fit into a skincare regimen?
Eighteen B is building a regimen. Firm + Replenish Serum is designed to help replenish skin’s natural barrier after cleansing and exfoliating. If you use any other oils and brightening treatments, these will go beneath Serum. Serum helps primes skin for moisture and should be followed by one of our moisturizers for added benefits. Revitalizing Hydrogel Moisturizer is a lightweight gel that’s ideal for layering, use in warm climates, or use on normal to oily skin. Hydrate + Restore Rich Cream is a decadent, nourishing cream that’s great for nighttime use or those seeking deeper hydration. Sunscreen is recommended to be applied on top of moisturizer during the day.
What skin types are best for Eighteen B products?
Eighteen B products can be used on all skin types. Firm + Replenish Serum helps deliver an essential layer of reinforcement for all skin types. We offer two types of moisturizers to suit a variety of skin types and conditions. Many of our customers use Revitalizing Hydrogel Moisturizer for daytime and Hydrate + Restore Rich Cream for nighttime, however, this is not a hard and fast rule. Both were designed for AM and/or PM.
How have your products been tested for efficacy?
As scientists, we hold ourselves to the highest standards in testing, and use a combination of in vitro testing on human tissues and clinical trials with human panelists to test our products for their efficacy and benefits. In our first clinical trial, 33 women with a mixture of normal, dry, and combination skin tested products containing b-silk™ protein. They reported tangible improvements in skin appearance, texture, and feel after 4 and 8 weeks of continuous use.
How do I know your products are safe?
In addition to running all FDA-recommended tests using the latest technology, we consider the risk profile of every ingredient to minimize potential for any negative impact or irritation.
How have your products been tested for consumer safety?
We put our b-silk™ protein through the gamut of tests for sensitization and irritation potential recommended by the FDA. This includes the Human Repeat Insult Patch test, testing for any non protein contaminants from our process, microbial testing, and heavy metals testing.
Do your products contain GMOs?
No, Eighteen B products do not contain genetically modified organisms. We use genetically modified yeast as a processing aid to manufacture the b-silk™ protein, which is then purified. This method of using modified yeast to produce proteins has been widely and safely used for decades to make consumer products like cheeses, medicines, and wine.
Are your products organic?
No, they are not. According to FDA regulations, the “Organic” label can only be applied to ingredients produced using agriculture. Since our proprietary ingredient, b-silk™ protein, is produced in a lab using biotechnology and fermentation, we cannot be certified organic.
Are your products vegan?
Yes. Eighteen B products do not contain any animal ingredients and are not tested on animals.
If your product has spider silk in it, how is it vegan?
There are no animals (or arachnids) involved in any step of the process when producing the b-silk™ protein. Biotechnology allows us to make those proteins using yeast and the age-old process of fermentation.
Are your products gluten-free and nut-free?
While our products do not contain gluten or nuts, at this time they are not certified gluten- and nut-free. If you have a serious allergy to either of these ingredients, we recommend consulting with your physician and conducting a patch test before using our products.
Are your products hypoallergenic?
“Hypoallergenic” is a term that drives scientists like us crazy. Currently, the FDA has no enforced standards or guidelines that govern the use of the term “hypoallergenic,” making it an unregulated marketing claim with no requirement for scientific substantiation. While we choose not to use the label “hypoallergenic”, all our products are tested for are tested for known allergens and irritants using the Human Repeat Insult Patch Test. If you have any known allergies or sensitivities, we recommend consulting with your physician and conducting a patch test before using our products.
Are your products safe to use on sensitive skin?
All our products are tested for known allergens and irritants using the Human Repeat Insult Patch Test, and are safe to use on sensitive skin. If you have any known sensitivities, we recommend consulting with your physician and conducting a patch test before using our products.
Are your products Dermatologist tested?
Yes, all our products are Dermatologist tested using the Human Repeat Insult Patch Test.
Are your products safe to use while pregnant or nursing?
Eighteen B products are held to the highest standards of safety and we believe they are safe to use for new and expectant mothers. In fact, our Chief Scientific Officer was pregnant while we developed it! We test our products extensively for things that could potentially be harmful to you or the baby (e.g. heavy metals and microbe contamination). In addition, we do not include any ingredients that are recommended to be avoided while you are pregnant. This includes ingredients that:
On top of that, our products are fragrance free, paraben free, phthalate free, mineral oil free, and petroleum distillate free.
B-SILK PROTEIN AND OTHER INGREDIENTS
Why did you decide to use spider silk in skincare?
Eighteen B was started by a group of scientists from Bolt Threads, a materials innovation company developing the next generation of biomaterials. One of Bolt’s core innovations is Microsilk®, a protein-based fiber inspired by the amazing properties of spider silk. As we studied Microsilk®, we began thinking about the variety of applications for this amazing material.
Knowing the rich history of silk in biomedical engineering and tissue regeneration, we naturally wanted to explore whether our silk proteins might be beneficial in skincare. So, a small group of scientists set out to make and test some exploratory formulations. We were happily encouraged by the positive feedback we received from preliminary studies and trials. We knew that we discovered something special and couldn’t wait to share it with the world.
Were there spiders used in the making of b-silk™ protein?
No spiders are used in the making of Eighteen B products. B-silk™ protein is inspired by the material properties of spider webs and made using biotechnology and the age-old process of fermentation.
How is b-silk™ protein a “clean” ingredient?
We are on a mission to make skin care with the most trusted ingredients for human and planet health. B-silk™ protein is produced using a highly controlled and monitored fermentation process. It is a simple and clean process that involves only a few ingredients like yeast, water, sugar, and salt. We conduct rigorous and thorough testing on our b-silk™ protein including stringent impurity and microbe analysis.
Are the rest of the ingredients clean too?
Yes! We are relentless in seeking out and evaluating scientific evidence to determine what’s safe and effective to put into our formulations. We’ve gone to great pains to incorporate b-silk™ protein into formulations containing only ingredients that we feel good about using ourselves. Our formulations have been tested for skin sensitivities and irritation. They are fragrance free, paraben free, phthalate free, and petrolatum free (including mineral oil and petroleum distillates).
What other ingredients are in your products?
Each of our formulations contains a powerful blend of active ingredients that pair well with b-silk™ protein. B-silk™ protein is both a carrier and a barrier, that acts to deliver ingredients to the skin and provide a lightweight barrier to seal them in. For the comprehensive list of ingredients in each product, please visit the individual product pages here: Hydrate + Restore Rich Cream, Revitalizing Hydrogel Moisturizer, Firm + Replenish Serum
Do you have full ingredients listed for each of your products?
Yes! A complete list of ingredients can be found on each product page. Please visit the individual product pages here: Hydrate + Restore Rich Cream, Revitalizing Hydrogel Moisturizer, Firm + Replenish Serum
Do you use silicones in your products?
No. It's important to us to minimize the use of synthetic polymers in our formulations. At the moment, we are actively researching the environmental impact of synthetic polymers when they go down the drain. Our research is still underway, but we hope to have results to share with you soon.
In the meantime, we’ve decided to remove Silicones from our formulation criteria. Admittedly, it was a challenge to create formulations without Silicones, as they offer a very appealing slip. After much trial and error, we found that we can offer a unique texture with b-silk™ protein, which leaves a soft cushion on the skin that delighted our beta testers.
Is the Squalane in your products animal-based?
No, the Squalane in our products is vegan. It’s made through a fermentation process, not unlike how b-silk protein is derived. In this case, microorganisms metabolize plant-sourced sugars to derive sustainable, vegan Squalane.
Do your products contain fragrance?
No, our products smell neutral. We first tried to make our formulations without fragrance for the sake of simplicity. In the end, there was nothing to cover up.
Does Eighteen B use parabens?
No, Eighteen B products do not contain any parabens.
Can your packaging be recycled?
Our unit cartons for Revitalizing Hydrogel Moisturizer, Hydrate + Restore Rich Cream, and Firm + Replenish Serum are made of sugarcane and bamboo pulp, which makes them both compostable and recyclable. Our eye cream unit cartons are made of Forest Sustainability Council (FSC) Certified paper and are recyclable. Our serum bottle and eye cream jars can be recycled in glass collection streams. Our paper sleeve and shipping materials can be recycled in paper collection streams. All other components cannot be recycled, but our team is actively seeking more environmentally friendly solutions.

Amino Acid - Naturally occuring substances in your body that serve as the building blocks of all proteins, including the structural proteins that help keep your skin looking healthy.
Biocompatibility - A biocompatible material is compatible with living tissues, and will not harm, interfere, or cause any negative reaction from those tissues.
Cutometer - A precise tool that measures the elastic properties of skin by probing the skin surface via suction.
Corneometer - A precise tool that determines the moisture level of skin by probing the skin surface.
Extracellular Matrix - A complex network of water, structural proteins, proteoglycans, and minerals that determines how skin tissue looks and functions. As your skin ages, the structural proteins within the extracellular matrix start breaking down, resulting in the first signs of visible aging.
Molecular Hydrolysis - The process of breaking down a bigger molecule (polymer) into many smaller molecules (monomers) by severing the bonds that hold monomers together.
Molecular Weight - The mass of a molecule. It is the sum of all the atomic weight values in a given molecule and is expressed in Daltons.
Human Repeat Insult Patch Test (HRIPT) - The most common screening procedure for skin safety. The product is applied to the surface of skin 9 times over the course of 3 weeks, and the skin is assessed for a reaction. The results of the test help determine whether the product has the potential to sensitize and irritate your skin.
